Saugerties – William J, Nicklaus, Jr died Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley, Broadway Campus, in Kingston, NY. He was 94 years old.

Born January 15, 1928, in Saugerties, he was the son of the late William J Nicklaus, Sr and the late Naomi Tompkins Nicklaus. On September 6, 1959, he married the former Elsie Ross. Last year they celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary.

Having spent more than 60 years as a veterinary assistant at the Saugerties Animal Hospital, he worked for four different veterinarians. He also worked on the family farm for his entire life. A longtime member of Atonement Lutheran Church, he served for many years as the sextant. He was also a member of the Centerville Fire Company and a life member of both the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges in Saugerties.

In addition to his wife, Elsie, survivors include his son William J. Nicklaus III and his wife Dominique; his daughter Wendy Hughes and her husband Michael; his grandchildren Danielle Nicklaus, Keith Nicklaus and his wife Keri, Frances Hughes and his wife Marissa, Jeremy Simon-Hughes and his husband Michael; and his great-grandchildren Caleb and Sigrid. Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by his sister Naomi Nicklaus and his grandson William J. Nicklaus IV.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Atonement Lutheran Church, Market Street, Saugerties with Pastor Sonja Maclary officiating. Interment will follow immediately in Mountain View Cemetery. Friends may call Friday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Buono Funeral Service, Inc., Main Street, Saugerties, NY.
