Thomas F. Carpino Jr., known to many as Chick, was born in East Kingston, NY to Margaret (Szekeres) and Thomas Carpino Sr. on August 4, 1933. He attended Kingston High School until enlisting in the US Navy in 1951. After his military service, he returned to East Kingston and met his wife of nearly 70 years, Rosemary Doyle of Port Ewen, and started a family.
Over the years, Chick worked for area companies including Hercules Powder Company, the Kingston Police Department as a patrolman, and in construction until beginning his career at IBM in Kingston, Poughkeepsie and North Carolina until 1991. Chick and Rose lived in Saugerties for many years and then moved to River Road in Port Ewen, where he won a seat as town councilman for the Town of Esopus and held that position for eight years. Beginning in 1995, he and Rose spent their winters in Florida until moving there full-time in 1998 where they made many new friends and enjoyed a very active social life. Chick was known to be a wonderful dancer and enjoyed attending many community dances with his wife throughout their marriage.
He was also athletic and enjoyed playing sports including softball, golf and tennis. He became an ace at croquet, winning championship trophies in several tournaments. At 80 years old, he was featured in the Kingston Freeman for golfing a hole-in-one. He loved being outdoors and had a small farm when his family was young where he raised cows, chickens and pigs. He tended his large garden for many years and stored the fruits of the garden in a root cellar that he hand built into the side of a hill on their Rt. 32 property in Saugerties. He also enjoyed stonework and worked tirelessly designing and building beautiful stone patios and walls around their properties over the years.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Doyle, five children: Terri (Bob) Hlavaty, Thomasine (Greg) Helsmoortel, Thomas (Chris) Carpino, Rosemary Tracey Chase, and Troy Carpino; grandchildren: Caine (Andrea) Simmons, Stephanie Nickolich, Ryan (Brittany) Simmons, Jessica Simmons, Thomas (Kendra) Carpino IV, Jacob Carpino, Corey (Molly) Sinnott, Miranda Carpino and Rebecca (Dillion) Fleener, Christopher (Ana) Helsmoortel, Scott Helsmoortel and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Richard Carpino of East Kingston, a sister, Clara Smith of Florida and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Vincent Carpino.
He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
