Obituary

OBITUARY Glasco – Salvatore A. Mauro, Jr. left this world on June 16, 2014 as peacefully as the sun setting over the Catskill Mountains. He always thought his fortune was his family. Born July 28, 1927 in Glasco, NY to the late Salvatore A. Mauro, Sr. and Mary E. (Greco), he was known affectionately to his friends as "moonshine", to his family as "Buddy" or "Bert", and to his grandchildren as "poppy". He grew up in the small brick making community of Glasco. Growing up during the Great Depression made him part of this country's Greatest Generation. He appreciated the simple rewards of life, the worshipping of God, the love of family, the satisfaction of working hard and realishing his free time. Salvatore left Glasco in 1945 to serve in the United States Army and was stationed in Japan where he served until 1947. He married the love of his life, Theresa Misasi on September 10, 1950. He was a member of the Teamster's Union from the early 1950's to the late 70's, always proud of having helped to build the NY State Thruway. Salvatore was employed by the Hudson Cement Company for over 14 years. Salvatore then went to work for the NY State Bridge Authority until his retirement in 1989. Sal spent his retirement years playing music on his trumpet and trombone. He was a member of the Musicians union from the 1950' until his passing. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. Up until a debilitating stroke eight years ago, you could find him riding his bike around town, Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. He could often be heard telling a joke to anyone who would listen, he loved to laugh. Salvatore was a member of the Glasco Fire Dept. for over 60 years and a member of the Lamouree-Hacket Post #72 American Legion. In addition to Theresa, his wife of more than 63 years, he is survived by his two daughters, Pamela Frost and her husband Keith of Santa Maria, Ca, Marilyn Freeburg and her husband Alan of Saugerties; his two sons, David Mauro and his wife Joan of Glasco, and Salvatore Mauro III of Santa Barbara; his grandchildren, Thomas Mauro and his wife Kate, Sarah Mauro, Jefferson Frost and Laura Sperry, , Christopher Freeburg and his wife Kathleen, and Julian Frost; , and his great-grandchildren Arianna, Thomas, and Greta. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Roland Mauro and his wife Anna, and a sister Julia Lovin and her husband John. A Funeral procession will form 9:15 AM, Saturday June 21, 2014 at Buono Funeral Service, Inc., Main Street Chapel, Saugerties, NY and then proceed to St. Joseph's RC Church in Glasco where a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Rev. Monsignor Charles Zanotti, Pastor of St. Joseph's will officiate. Full military honors will follow immediately in St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery, Barclay Heights. Friends may call Friday from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and again 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Buono Funeral Service, Inc., Main Street, Saugerties.
