Saugerties – Nickolas H. Steyer, "Nick", died suddenly on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at his home in Saugerties. He was 82 years old.
Born March 9, 1936 in Queens, NY, and raised in Windham, NY, he was the son of Nickolas and Mabel Edwards-Steyer. On February 19, 1961 he married the former Aline Gilbert.
Nick was an active member in his community having been a volunteer firefighter for years and life member of CA Lynch Fire Company, Malden West Camp Fire Company and the Exempt Firemen's Association. As one of the original Town of Saugerties Police Officers he was part of the group affectionately known as Riley's Raiders. He was also a Police Officer for the Village of Saugerties. He was a founding member of the Blue Katz Mens Club, a member of the Masons-Scottish Right, and the Empire State Towing and Recovery Association. As an avid outdoorsman, he was a county coordinator for hunter education and taught hunter safety courses for over 40 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Donna West of California, Scott Steyer and his wife Marybeth Davis Steyer, Nick Steyer and his wife Pam, Joseph Steyer and his wife Tracy, and Stephanie Steyer-Wynne and her husband Tim all of Saugerties; ten grandchildren, Scott Ricks, Michael, Dylan, Flynn, Nickolas and his wife Maura, Logan, Casey, Steven and his wife Sarah, Rachel, Sarah Steyer, Dylan Lynch; and by his great-granddaughter Sequoia.
Cremation was private and under the direction of Buono Funeral Service, Inc. The family will receive friends Friday, April 27, 2018 from 9:30- 11:00 am at Katsbaan Reformed Church, 1800 Old Kings Highway, Saugerties, NY. A memorial service and reception for friends and family will follow starting at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Nick's memory be made to Empire State Towing and Recovery Association Educational Scholarship Fund, 690 Saratoga Road #185, Burnt Hills, NY 12027, ESTRANY.org.
