Saugerties – Janet R. Curry, died Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson after a long illness. She was 68 years old.
Born October 31, 1948 in New York City, she was the daughter of Edward and Jeanette (Bogdanowitz) Curry. A 1966 graduate of Saugerties High School and former employee of Ferroxcube she eventually became a supervisor at Micronetics in Kingston.
Janet was a celebrity around Saugerties and was a friendly face to everyone who stopped by the Sunoco Mart and Gas Station on Ulster Avenue where she worked for years. Many local residents knew her as a columnist for the Saugerties Post Star where "On My Soapbox" appeared weekly. Previously she had been a hostess at the Friendly Inn in West Camp.
She was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist in Centerville and was known for her infectious and joyful personality. People compared her to the pied piper because children always seemed to enjoy being around her. For the past 9 years, Janet was a resident of the The Pines in Catskill, NY, where she served as the President of the Resident's Council and developed a close bonding with so many residents as well as the staff.
In addition to her late parents family includes her siblings, Edward Curry (his late wife Joann) of Lansdale, PA, her late sister Lorraine Blake, Lorraine's husband John of Pine Plains, NY, her sister Helen Avagliano and her husband Frank of Saugerties, her late brother Robert, Robert's wife Barbara of Saugerties, her brother George and his wife Mary Ellen Curry of Palenville, and her sister Debra Littlefield and her husband Gary of Saugerties; and by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great- nephews.
A Funeral procession will form 9:15 AM Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Buono Funeral Service, Inc., Saugerties, NY and then proceed to St. John the Evangelist Parish Center in Centerville, where a 10:00 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow immediately in St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery, Barclay Heights. Friends may call Friday from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Buono Funeral Service, Inc. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (
