Henry Anthony Furboter, 97, of Echo Hill Road - Saugerties, passed away peacefully with family members by his side on Friday, May 24, 2024. He was born to Henry J. And Mary C. (Lanigan) Furboter on August 10, 1926, in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up he spent summers and holidays in Spring Valley NY and at the Lanigan family homestead in Fish Creek, Saugerties.

Henry was a graduate of St. Edmund's School and James Madison High School of Brooklyn, and was as well a graduate of St. John's University in Queens NY.

Henry served in the American Theatre with honor and distinction in the US Navy during World War II. He spent the last 70 years living in and restoring the Lanigan family stone house in Saugerties built in 1840 by his Great Grandfather Richard Lanigan, a stone quarryman from County Kilkenny, Ireland.

Henry, "Hank", was a prolific storyteller and local historian with particular interest in the High Woods / Fish Creek hamlet of Saugerties where he passed on the lore of stone quarry men and the Banshee of the Patch Road. He often visited the archives in Albany to research histories of Saugerties properties, studying individual deeds and linages that he would commit to memory.

He was as independent and as strong as a man could be, a prolific stone worker, wood worker and gardener, he worked the land up at Echo Hill well into his 96th year and even hiked to the top of Overlook Mountain for his 94th birthday.

He was a devoted family man, a life-long bachelor, who spent diligent hours documenting the family's Irish roots hundreds of years back and compiled into catalogs for his family to enjoy. In his research he visited many cemeteries in the US and Ireland. An avid horseman, he could be seen riding his beloved Echo Blue down Fish Creek Road. A devoted Catholic and proud member of St John's Parish in Centerville, he never missed Mass and often went multiple times a week.

Henry is pre-deceased by his loving sister Loretta A. (Furboter) and brother in law Edward G. Himberger II of Echo Hill Road; his brother Richard Furboter and sister in law Marie Furboter of Band Camp Road, Henry was beloved and close to his many nieces and nephews; Richard and Judith Himberger of Red Hook; Linda Himberger of Schenectady; Edward and Brigid (Walsh) Himberger of Saugerties; Peter and Christina Himberger of Boiceville; Dianne (Furboter) and Douglas Wolff of Saugerties, Donna (Furboter) and Victor DeRosa of East Norwich; Richard and Donna Furboter of East Meadow; Anna (Furboter) and Michael Bishop of Westbury; Gilbert Victor Furboter; Daniel and Christine Furboter of Levittown; and Suzanne (Furboter) and Fernando Pena of Astoria;

Henry also enjoyed his relationships with his 15 Grand nieces and nephews, and 1 Great-Great nephew, as well as numerous cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 am Thursday, June 6, 2024 at St. Mary of the Snow Church in Saugerties. Interment with full military honors will follow the next day, Friday, June 7, 2024 at 9:00 am in Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
