Saugerties – Helen Cashara died and went to be with the lord on Monday, July 17, 2023 at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, NY. She was 91 years old.
Born February 6, 1932 in Staten Island, she was the daughter of the late Antonio Merola and the late Anna Perna Merola. On April 15, 1951 she married Albert "Chappy" Cashara who predeceased her on November 21, 2016.
Prior to moving to Glasco, NY, she worked as a telephone operator in New York City and then worked as a seamstress in various dress factories around Glasco and Saugerties. She also served as an Election Inspector and Poll Worker in local elections. A parishioner of St. Joseph's in Glasco for over 50 years, she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. Helen also hosted a prayer group on Tuesdays in her home every week for more than 20 years. Helen liked to share her stories of traveling to Medjugorje and Italy where she was once fortunate enough to have had a private mass and meeting with then Pope John Paul at the Vatican, who eventually became a saint.
Survivors include her children, Joseph Cashara and his wife Charlein of Lake Katrine, Anthony Cashara and his partner Michelle Nachtigall of Syracuse, Maryann Richardson and her fiancé James Sulkey of South Carolina; her four grandchildren, Evelyn and Nathan Cashara, Nicole Gardner and her husband Brenton and Zachary Richardson; and her two great-grandchildren Grayson and Keegan Gardner. In addition to her husband and siblings, she was pre-deceased by her son-in-law, Danny Richardson.
A Funeral procession will form 9:45 AM, Saturday July 22, 2023 at Buono Funeral Service, Inc. in Saugerties, NY and then proceed to St. Joseph's RC Church in Glasco where at 10:30 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow immediately in St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery, Barclay Heights. Friends may call Friday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Buono Funeral Service, Inc., Main Street, Saugerties, NY.
