OBITUARY Saugerties – Albert H. Allen died Sunday October 13, 2013 at home. He was 83 years old. Born December 4, 1929 in Middletown, NY, He was the son of Paul H. and Anna Gerow Allen. On April 18, 1964 he married the former Frieda Hollstein. After 38 years of service, he retired from IBM in Kingston where he was a database research Librarian. He was a member of the US Army 82nd Airborne division where he completed 29 jumps and served during the Korean War. Mr. Allen's father worked for the US Government and as a result Albert traveled abroad extensively during his formative years. He lived in London, Portugal and Lebanon and graduated from the American Community School in Lebanon. This led to a lifelong interest of his in those areas of the world. In 1949 he graduated from Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania and in 1951 he graduated from Lehigh University and subsequently received master's degrees from both NYU and SUNY Albany. He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club, played tennis regularly and an avid skier having belonged to the Trail Sweepers. He was fond of all animals but particularly his cats, Chubby and Blackie. A lifelong environmentalist, he served on the Ulster County Environmental Council and was a former chairman. He was instrumental in organizing many of the original newspaper recycling programs in the area. He was also served on the Saugerties Board of Education. In addition to his wife, Frieda, he is survived by his son, Chris Allen of Saugerties; and his Sister, Susanne Rittenberry and her husband Giles of Poughkeepsie. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Beth Allen in 1991. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, October 18, 2013 at Buono Funeral Service, Inc., Saugerties. Interment with full military honors will follow in Blue Mt. Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Buono Funeral Service, Inc.
