It is with great sadness that the family of Adele Elizabeth Buono announces her passing at the age of 100 on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Northern Dutchess Hospital. Adele was born on October 16, 1922 in Embarrass, Minnesota. She and her twin brother were the youngest of seven children born to the late Alex and Elizabeth Hanka. Her childhood was a happy one, growing up on a farm with her brothers and sisters, despite her mother dying when she was only five years old. Because only Finnish was spoken in their home, she had to repeat her Kindergarten year at school but learned English quickly.
From the time she was a child those who knew her appreciated her high energy. They also knew her for her kindness, generosity, baking/cooking skills and impeccable fashion sense.
When she was 20 she moved to the big city of Chicago where she met her husband of almost 40 years, Anthony Joseph Buono, who was a teacher at the time. They returned to Saugerties in 1948 after the death of Anthony's brother, Thomas Buono. In Saugerties, they raised their five children on Elm Street. She was a wonderful mother and the best Grammy. Adele was a gentle soul. If you knew her, you had to love her.
Her interest in the purpose of life led her to a study of the Bible where she began to appreciate God's purpose of living forever on a paradise earth. She was an active member of the Saugerties Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1973.
She was predeceased by her husband Anthony in 1983; siblings Henry, Walter, Paul, Inez, Anelma and her twin brother Levi. She is survived by her children Thomas Buono (Pam), Elizabeth Loria, Marilyn Buono, Anthony Buono (Donna) and Adele Mecionis (Michael); Grandchildren, Amy Buono, Robby Buono, Andrew Kasper (Kim), Gretel Swart, Zach Swart, Mia Pillsworth (Sean-Paul), Kristin Zelber, Joanna Natale (Ryan), Nicole Lang (Michael), Alec Mecionis (Jeanne), Eve Mecionis and Michael Mecionis; Great Grandchildren Megan Kasper, Andrew Kasper, Aaron Kasper, Evan Swart, Nicholas Topple, Madison Swart, Willow Swart, Violette Pillsworth, and Townes Pillsworth; Great Great Grandchildren Lennon and Dylan Topple, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held 4-7 pm on Saturday, February 18 at Buono Funeral Service, 100 Main Street, Saugerties, NY. Memorial will be held on Sunday, February 19 at 3 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 293 Mike Krout Road, Saugerties, NY.
Adele will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
